We all have great
ideas, and every day, ordinary people turn their simple, clever ideas
into products or services that earn them millions in royalties. So what
separates those who earn money exploiting their ideas from those who don't?
The answers are in this book. It gives you the information and the motivation
you need to turn your ideas into money without investment or financial
risk.
In How to License
Your Million Dollar Idea, Second Edition, Harvey Reese, a successful new
product developer, consultant, and licensing agent, reveals his system
for creating commercially profitable ideas and his secrets for turning
them into lucrative licensing agreements. Not only will you find nuts-and-bolts
information on the licensing process, you'll also learn how to formulate
an idea and find the motivation to grow that idea into a fortune.
Totally revised and
updated, this Second Edition covers recent changes in patent law and how
the Internet has impacted modern licensing. Reese includes his proven
step-by-step process for formulating an idea that manufacturers are willing
to pay for, researching its authenticity, obtaining patents, finding prospects,
negotiating the deal, and beyond. Filled with examples of successful,
well-known licensing ventures, How to License Your Million Dollar Idea,
Second Edition also features an expanded appendix of sample patent forms,
licensing agreements, disclosure statements, publications, contact information,
and more.

A
few excerpts... |
From the introduction:
“The
purpose of this book is to show you how to make your fortune with-out
risking one. If you?ll supply the will, I can supply the knowledge.
And you can keep your money in the bank. I?m billing this as the
How-to-Not-Go-into-Business-for-Yourself book. The trick is to
have other people spend their money and take the risk. If you
have an exciting, new idea that can turn a profit, company presidents
all over would love to hear from you, and it would be their pleasure
to give you a cut of the proceeds.”
From Chapter 2:
“Except for the
waiting time, this whole exercise should only take two or three minutes,
and you will almost certainly get an appointment. Never, ever describe your
idea on the telephone. It takes the mystery out of your visit, and you run
the risk that the person on the phone will lose interest. ...”
From Chapter 6:
“Every once in
a while, I encounter a company that simply hates to pay an advance and insists
that it's 'company policy' not to do it. I'm adamant on this issue and have
always managed to prevail. I explain that this Agreement is nothing more
than taking an option to produce a product. The licensee pays an advance
to earn the right to tie up your product idea for months and months. If
the company doesn't ultimately proceed with it, the advance is the penalty.
The licensee wouldn't be able to get an option on a piece of property without
money, so why should it be possible to do it with your new product concept?”

This is one of those
books that has the clear voice of experience on every page. Not a business
theory book, rather, this is a “here's everything I have learned over
the years--plain as I can tell you” kind of book. Reese has packed
an amazing amount of solid know-how into these pages. He provides his battle-tested
Licensing Agreement, which is important and will be very useful. But, as
he clearly explains, there is a lot more involved in licensing than a contract.
Any inventor or entrepreneur
hoping to license an idea for the first time will learn a lot from this
book. Even an experienced inventor/licenser may find some useful new tips
and wish to compare notes. If this book doesn't provide absolutely “everything
you need to know,” it certainly provides an excellent start.
HARVEY REESE is
a well-known new product developer and consultant who has created and
successfully licensed more than 100 of his own commercial ideas -- plus
those of other inventors. He is a regular contributor to Inventor?s
Digest magazine, teaches product design classes at The Art Institute
of Philadelphia, and writes a monthly newsletter that goes out to thousands
of inventors around the world. ~
